Budget Planning 2017-18

A Farewell Ceremony is being planned for the Walled Lake Schools Community Education Center on Thursday, June 8, from 5-8 p.m. at the CEC.

“We hope to celebrate the amazing people, students, staff and families, who have walked through the halls of the CEC when it was a high school, junior high, administration building, Community High School and a Community Education Center,” Kenneth Gutman, superintendent, said.

WLCSD is asking for former students, staff and community members to share their memories by completing a short online survey below:

At the Thursday, March 2, 2017, Board of Education meeting the Board approved the Administration’s recommendation to close the Community Education Center following the 2016/2017 school year and relocate programs to the greatest extent possible to other available district facilities and further approve planning for the demolition and sale of the building site.

We are committed to working together with staff, parents, students, and the community to ensure quality learning continues for our students. We are dedicated to to providing welcoming environments that are conducive to collaborative learning.

Previously, at the Feb. 2, 2017 Board of Education meeting the Board heard a proposal to close the Community Education Center beginning in the 2017-18 school year.

This recommendation was initially part of the 2011 Plante Moran Facilities Utilization Study when it was suggested to close the CEC along with Twin Beach and Maple Elementary Schools.

This recommendation was made as one of the continual budget reductions made over the past 15 years.

The District conducted two Community Forums so the community could meet with District administrators and learn more about this recommendation.

The Community Forums were:

  • 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 at the Wixom Community Center located on Pontiac Trail with the Wixom Public Library.
  • 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 at the Commerce Township Community Library located in Dodge Park in Commerce Township.
